La Tumba de La Reina Roja / 2003-2006
The Red Queen is the first series of artworks in Ricardo Mazal’s Trilogy of Life, Death and Transformation. The second series is Odenwald 1152, and the trilogy culminates in the Kailash/Kora body of work.
The discovery of the mummified remains of La Reina Roja, in Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico in 1994, in an ancient Mayan Temple is a remarkable moment for both archaeology and the artist. Having garnered enough attention as a painter of national importance in Mexico, Mazal received a grant to artistically commemorate this incredible find through a series of paintings, monotypes, photographs, and his first site-specific installation. Within this series, and through his increasing use of digital technology, Mazal will discover an approach to painting and exhibiting that is uniquely his, and will constitute the first step in a mystic initiation that will take Mazal all the way around the world.
